The world was different place the first time we took a team to serve in Kenya in early 2020. There was no understanding of Covid, no droughts, no knowledge of how the world would change just a few short weeks after our return to the States. That was 3 years ago, so needless to say, we were anxious to return to Kenya.
Our team was small, but mighty. We were challenged by the 2.5 year drought the country was currently experiencing, but encouraged to see the Lord’s fruit, planted from the seeds of faithful witnesses and watered by prayer. What was once green grassland had turned into a burnt countryside of brown dirt and dust and people are suffering. There were many chances to share God’s word at Sunday church service, during home visits, with the construction team, teachers at Camp Brethren and when visiting various women’s groups. It is always a blessing to see the students at the school and we were able to share song and skits with them, as well as, serve them their lunch that day. Soon, the students would head home for midterm break, and it was hard to hear that that meal, would be the last some of them would have in the coming days. The drought was causing many families to choose between education and food.
Our goal to build hope has taken root with many former families served by the ministry sharing how God has been working in their lives. The current home build recipient, Michael, shared, ““I am well advanced in age, and never have I had so much hope.” Praise God for our one true hope, Jesus.
There is much more to share than we have space here, but we thank God for our time in Kenya and we continue to pray for our faith to grow, our obedience to improve, and for our love for our neighbors (at home and around the world) to abound as we reflect further on our time in Eburru.
