Journey to the Amazon: Glimpse of God’s Work in the Jungle

When we boarded the boat deep in the Amazon this past February, I knew we were on an exploratory trip—but I didn’t know just how much it would shape my heart.

We had the incredible privilege of traveling deep into the Amazon region of Brazil alongside our trusted partners at Justice and Mercy International (JMI) and Justice and Mercy Amazon (JMA).  This trip opened my eyes in new ways—not just to the pressing physical needs of the Amazon’s most remote communities—but to the faith, courage, and perseverance of those who are faithfully serving the Kingdom in one of the world’s most challenging environments.

Equipping the Jungle Pastors

One of the most humbling parts of the trip was participating in a multi-day JMI jungle pastors’ conference. These 134 faithful men and women had traveled—most 3 to 7 days by boat and some up to 11 days (!!)—to attend. They came hungry for encouragement, training, and spiritual equipping, so they could return to their remote villages to love and lead like Christ.

The night we arrived, we had the incredible honor of washing the feet of these pastors—just as Jesus did for His disciples. As we knelt in prayer, tears streamed down faces worn by sacrifice and faith. It was one of the most impactful things I’ve ever experienced. To look into the eyes of someone who has given so much for the Kingdom—and to serve them in such a tangible way—was truly a sacred moment.

Visiting the Villages

After the conference, we traveled by another boat – often the only mode of transportation available in the Amazon – to visit some of the jungle villages, spending time with pastors and local families to understand their challenges and daily realities.

One day stood out in particular: we spent it with Pastor David and his wife, visiting a village to see how homes are constructed in the face of extreme seasonal shifts. The Amazon experiences a dry and a wet season, with water levels rising as much as 20 to 40 feet. Some homes are built on stilts; others float on tree logs. As a home builder in the States, it was staggering to see the creativity and resilience it takes just to survive here.

The need is real. Life is hard. Water is either too scarce—or in excess. And yet, the people press on with courage and hope.

At Paradigm Foundation, we’re now exploring how we can come alongside JMI and JMA to help meet housing needs in these areas—bringing not just shelter, but dignity and the hope of Christ.

God at Work in Manaus

We also spent time in the city of Manaus with Pastor Oz, a true Kingdom builder whose ministry is transforming his community. His heart for people and his love for the Lord are contagious.

We’re also grateful for the time we shared with Mary Cathrine and Sarah— two amazing leaders at JMI and JMA who are pouring themselves out for the sake of the Gospel. In addition, we had the pleasure to also learn from and with Kate and Vadim, JMI’s Moldova Directors and a team from Rolling Hills Community Church in TN—what  an inspiration and encouragement to spend quality time with them all.

Reflections and Moving Forward

This trip changed me. I now carry a deep burden and excitement for what God may do through the Paradigm Foundation in this part of the world. The vastness of the Amazon, the daily struggles of the people, and the tenacity of local pastors left a deep mark on me. There are still many unreached people here who have never heard the name of Jesus. And yet, God is raising up leaders through JMI’s jungle pastors’ program to go into these places with the hope of the Gospel. We’re honored to be part of that vision!

One of my biggest takeaways from the trip is this: we are representatives of Christ everywhere we go. Our words, our actions, our presence—it all speaks. May we choose to walk in love, humility, and the power of the Spirit.

This was more than just a mission trip—it was a divine invitation to be part of something much bigger than ourselves! This trip was life-changing and we’re prayerfully asking what’s next, and we’re excited to see how God will use our partnership with JMI and JMA to bring both physical homes and eternal hope to the Amazon. The need is great—but so is our God. And He’s already moving!

I’m excited to see what God has in store next! To God be the glory.
